Timing matters with oaks
Oak wilt is a fungal disease spread by sap beetles that are attracted to fresh wounds in spring and early summer. Pruning oaks in the dormant season, roughly November through February, avoids giving those beetles an open door. If an oak must be cut during the growing season, the wound should be sealed right away.
Red oaks versus white oaks
Red oak group trees, including northern red, black and pin oaks, are more vulnerable to oak wilt and can die within weeks of infection. White oak group trees, like white, post and bur oaks, are more resistant. Knowing which you have changes how carefully you need to watch it.
Protecting the roots
Most oak problems we see start underground. New patios, driveways, trenching for utilities or piling fill dirt over the roots can kill a mature oak slowly over several years. If you are planning construction near an oak, call before the work begins.
